SUMMARY:Live! Comedian & Survivor\, Karen Mills
DESCRIPTION:This self-proclaimed “crazy dog lady” has a straight-forward approach to the realities of life. Her smart\, funny\, keen observations will keep you laughing at yourself as you relate to her experiences. Even Ovarian cancer couldn’t stop her from turning her pain into punchlines. Diagnosed in 2013 after a routine checkup\, Karen was determined to take on the disease with hope and humor and in 2016 she was chosen to present her talk\, “Cancer is a Laughing Matter” at TEDxChattanooga. Karen has faced every challenge with determination. She stands at 5’2″ and was told more than once that she was too short to play basketball. Not only did she play\, in 1981 she led the nation in assists and became the first\, Division 1 first team All-American in UT Chattanooga’s history. Karen was the first UTC athlete to earn that distinction in any sport\, male or female. Her #12 uniform was retired and in 1981 she was inducted into Chattanooga’s Basketball Hall of Fame.

DESCRIPTION:The Effingham County Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce the 2024 General and Primary Election Candidate Forums in partnership with Kinetic by Windstream. These forums\, designed to promote civic engagement and informed decision-making\, will provide a unique opportunity for voters to interact with candidates vying for various offices crucial to the future of Effingham County. \nScheduled to take place at the historic Mars Theatre beginning at 5PM on April 17th and 18th\, the candidate forums will cover a range of races\, including but not limited to those for the School Board\, Board of Commissioners\, District Attorney\, Tax Commissioner\, Probate Judge\, and Clerk of Court. Independently moderated and open to the public\, these forums are essential to the democratic process\, allowing candidates to articulate their platforms and voters to assess their qualifications and positions on key issues. \nIn keeping with the Effingham Chamber of Commerce’s commitment to promoting a pro-business environment and sustained economic prosperity\, all candidates were provided with questionnaires\, the answers for which will be available at the forums. These questions have been carefully crafted with the greater business community in mind\, addressing economic development\, small business\, education\, and infrastructure issues. They aim to give voters valuable insights into the candidates’ positions and priorities. \nAll community members are invited to attend the 2024 Election Candidate Forums at the Mars Theater on April 17th and 18th. Doors will open at 4PM and the forums will commence promptly at 5PM.
