The City of Springfield is proud to announce the start of major improvements to the Springfield Wastewater Treatment Plant, a significant infrastructure investment designed to improve system reliability, strengthen regulatory compliance, and prepare the community for future residential and economic growth.
Construction services for the project are being performed by Ruby-Collins, Inc., with engineering and design services being performed by Thomas & Hutton.
These upgrades represent a critical step forward for Springfield’s utility infrastructure and long-term planning efforts. The existing wastewater treatment plant contains infrastructure that is more than 60 years old and currently operates with limited redundancy. The improvements will modernize key treatment components, improve operational flexibility, and help ensure continued environmental compliance as the community continues to grow.
“This project is about protecting the future of Springfield,” said City Manager Lauren Eargle. “Reliable infrastructure is the foundation for responsible growth. These upgrades not only improve the day-to-day operation and resiliency of our wastewater system, but they also lay the groundwork for providing the City with additional operational capacity needed to support future residential, commercial, and economic growth within our community.”
The project is designed to improve redundancy throughout the treatment process, allowing critical maintenance and operational activities to occur without major service disruptions. The upgraded facility is the foundation for providing the City with additional operational capacity needed to support future demand as growth continues across the region.
Mayor and Council have consistently emphasized an infrastructure-first approach to growth management, recognizing the importance of investing in core utility systems before expanding development capacity.
Construction activities are expected to continue through 2027. Residents may notice increased contractor activity around the treatment plant site during the construction period.
The City of Springfield appreciates the continued support and patience of the community as these important improvements move forward.
