The City of Springfield & Municipal Elections

This is an election year for the City of Springfield and the voters will need to elect citizens for three of the six Council Member positions as well as the Mayor.

DID YOU KNOW:
The current City Council and Mayor of the City of Springfield, as well as their current terms, are listed on the city website: www.SpringfieldGA.org/residents/elected-officials/

The City of Springfield is considered a municipality, often referred to as an “incorporated city”, meaning that it has corporate status and its own governmental system. It has its own City Council and Mayor that adopt ordinances and regulations that are unique to the city.

The City of Springfield is made up of all the properties located within the municipal boundary. However, many people do not realize that having a Springfield Zip Code (31329) does not mean your property is located in the City of Springfield. More often than not, the federal zip code systems do not match up with the city boundaries. Only people located within the actual municipal boundary of the City of Springfield are considered the residents of Springfield and are eligible to vote for the Springfield Mayor and Springfield City Council.

Those that have a Springfield addresses, but do not live inside the City are residents of Effingham County and considered in the “unincorporated area”.

There are a few ways you can tell if you are located within the City’s boundary. You can look at your tax bill and see if you are being charged for city taxes, you can check your parcel’s pin number for the letter “S”, or you can always call City Hall and ask.

The City of Springfield has Seven elected officials. One Mayor and Six Council members. In some cities, council members may represent a certain area of the city, but in Springfield all the Council are considered “at-large”, meaning they all represent the city as a whole. Both the Mayor and the Council Members serve four year terms, and this year the Mayor and three Council Terms are coming up for election.

If a citizen would like to run for a Elected Office, they must first go through the qualifying process.

Qualifying Dates are Monday, August 18th through Thursday, August 21st. You must come to City Hall on these days between 8:30am and 4:30pm to fill out and turn in your qualifying documents. Once the qualifiers have been verified, the candidate will be announced and the elections will take place on November 4th. To be eligible for qualifying you must be: at least 21 years of age; A resident of the City of Springfield for twelve (12) months preceding the election; A qualified voter in the City of Springfield; and not be disqualified to hold an office in the state.

SPRINGFIELD FALL FESTIVAL:

The 2025 Springfield Fall Festival is set for November 8th! This festival is always a fun time and the City is continuing the tradition of providing amazing musical talent by inviting classic country legend Mark Chesnutt to the stage this year! For the opening act, the festival welcomes back Chuck Courtenay. A local musician that mixes classic county music with folk and americana sounds that will be a high energy and heartfelt compliment to the main act.

As always, this is a free concert and we hope you come out and enjoy the festival and Downtown Springfield.
