The City of Springfield would like to inform residents of a planned maintenance shutdown at the DRT facility scheduled to begin March 2, 2026 and continue for several weeks.
DRT’s Plant Manager has been in communication with Effingham Emergency Management, and DRT’s Safety Manager regarding the upcoming work. As part of this coordination effort, DRT has scheduled the portion of the shutdown that may produce temporary odors to coincide with the Board of Education’s Spring Break in order to minimize potential impacts to local schools.
Additionally, DRT plans to implement a new process designed to strip remaining sulfur from the tanks prior to opening them. This proactive measure is intended to further reduce the likelihood of odor release during maintenance activities.
We appreciate DRT’s efforts to coordinate the timing of this project to lessen community impact and for proactively notifying public safety officials. While some temporary odors may still occur, every effort is being made to minimize disruptions.
We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
